Floral Impression #1

This one is a mix of real and impressions/inventions.  I'm going to do a little series of these while the ideas are still fresh and fun.

Opened for Lunch

Opened for Lunch
acrylic on canvas 20x20
This was a cute little cafĂ© with a shared doorway into an antique/used furniture store.  It was so brightly decorated that I snapped a quick picture.

Let the Colour Begin

Let the Colour Begin
acrylic on canvas 30x24

This is the first painting I did in a plein air class with Cathy Gibbons.  We've encountered all kinds of temperatures, wind, snow and rain.  My canvas sizes got smaller pretty quickly.

Backyard totem pole

Backyard totem pole
Acrylic on canvas 12x24

I had the opportunity to set up my easel in this wonderful backyard filled with hand carved totem poles.  This one wasn't quite done but I chose it anyways.  They were all quite amazing.

Up High Up North - NFS

Up High Up North
Acrylic on canvas 30x24

I borrowed this reference from a good friend and wish I was there in person as it looks like a lovely spot to do lots of plein air painting.  When this painting sells, my friend gets a meal on me!

Windswept

Windswept
Acrylic on canvas 20x24

I was in a mixed media workshop with Laurie Wonfor Nolan and we also were able to re-work a painting that we weren't terribly fond of.  This was so much fun!

I have been painting over the summer and hopefully can share some new work with you soon.

Papaya, Radishes, Beets - SOLD

Papaya, Radishes, Beets
Acrylic on canvas 24x30

A quick trip to the grocery store and I had my props.  Because of the intense orange of the papaya, this painting is very high key!

Bits of Red

Bits of Red
Acrylic on canvas 22x26

I've been looking at this one for a couple weeks now and I'm not sure if it is done.  I've made some small changes and might keep it aside in case I tweak it a bit more.

Little House on Main St.

Little House on Main St.
acrylic on canvas 24x18

Painted from a photo with a fair amount of editing but I wanted to capture the same feeling I had when I was small and visited this house many times.

The One and Only (red tulip) NFS

The One and Only (red tulip)
acrylic on canvas 24x24

This was a lone red and white parrot tulip poking out among other plants in last year's garden.  I enjoyed painting it last week during our very prolonged winter!

Apples on Tree

Apples on Tree
Acrylic on canvas 36x24

I got right inside the apple tree to take a photo for this painting.  It was one of those really old apple trees planted generations ago.

A Spanish Hillside

With this one, I tried to keep the palette softer with a weathered, aged look.

Pink Peony - SOLD

Pink Peony
Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas 24x24

While at the RBG in Burlington last spring, I took photos of peonies and other flowers.  This painting was inspired by a very large peony in the process of opening.  I didn't record the name but thought it was lovely.

Summer Colours

Summer Colours
Acrylic on canvas 24x18

The colours in this painting just kind of evolved.  I was walking through this area in the summer and the colours I saw were greens, blues and browns.

Iris Garden

Iris Garden
Acrylic on canvas 18x24

My starting point for this one was a photo reference I took at the RBG in Burlington last spring while there plein air painting in watercolours with artist friend Donna Fratesi.  I only focused on the Irises and eliminated the background trees, shrubs and people.

Apple Blossoms - sold

Apple Blossoms
Acrylic on gallery canvas 24x30
I started this one last summer and worked on it in stages.  Parts of it came together quickly and other parts needed more thinking and looking and decisions on what to do.  This painting was donated to the Button Factory Arts Auction 2016.

Tulip Parade

Tulip Parade
Acrylic on canvas 24x18
